New Years Eve in the northern hemisphere has never made much sense to me. If winter begins on the 21st December with the solstice and ends on 20th March with the start of spring, why are we celebrating an arbitrary ‘new year’ ten days into the bleakest season? Personally, I subscribe to the Persian New Year of Nowruz (‘new day’) on the first day of spring when renewal, hope and seasonal change is truly upon us. Nowruz also places importance on major spring cleaning and shopping for new clothes - my kind of holiday.
