There’s a scene in Apple TV’s Loot that makes me howl with laughter. In the premiere of season 2, when asked about her current style vibe, Molly deadpans: ‘Tibetan monk chic.’ Wearing a signature Lanvin white cape gown she continues to waft through her billionaire beach pad towards her aquaponic herb wall. Apart from the disconnect of the average life, it’s a reminder that often what looks great in someone else’s existence, isn’t necessarily a fit for someone else. I’ve found that one of the main reasons women over-purchase repeatedly is because they impulsively buy what looks good on an influencer with little context about whether the garment even fits their lifestyle. These are the items that hang around your wardrobe, are worn once, struggle to fit your aesthetic and inevitably end up being resold or worse - thrown out.

Last week’s linen query got me thinking about trendy items I wouldn’t necessarily suggest buying into. That’s not to say that some people look incredible in these styles (they do!) but in my experience with real people and wearable wardrobes, they are the few and far between.
